Your first visit to a New Jersey dispensary: what to expect

What to bring, how check-in works, and how to get the most out of talking with a budtender, step by step.

Walking into a dispensary for the first time can feel like walking into a shop where everyone else knows the rules. The good news: there isn't much to know, and a good dispensary team will happily walk you through all of it. Here's what a typical first visit to a New Jersey adult-use dispensary looks like.

Before you go

You need to be 21 or older, and you need to prove it. Bring a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, state ID card or passport. An expired ID or a photo of your ID on your phone won't work.

It also helps to think, even loosely, about what you're curious about. You don't need product names or technical terms. "Something to unwind with on a Saturday night" or "I've never tried this before and want to keep it mild" is a perfect place to start.

Checking in

Most dispensaries have a front desk or check-in area near the entrance. A team member will look at your ID, and you may be asked to wait a moment before heading to the sales floor. This is normal: dispensaries are required to confirm every guest's age, every visit.

Talking with a budtender

A budtender is the person behind the counter who helps you choose. Think of them as a knowledgeable guide. Good questions to ask include:

  • What would you suggest for someone who's new to this?
  • What's the difference between these two products?
  • How much is a small amount for this product?
  • Can I see the lab results for this?

There's no such thing as a silly question. At Leaf for Life, explaining things in plain English is a big part of the job, and we'd much rather you ask than guess.

Reading a label

Products sold at licensed New Jersey dispensaries are tested and labeled under state rules. You'll typically see the product type, the amount of THC and CBD, the batch information and required warnings. If anything on a label is unclear, ask us to walk you through it.

Paying and heading home

Once you've chosen, your purchase is packaged for you to take home. Using cannabis in public places isn't allowed in New Jersey, and you should never drive after use, so plan to enjoy it at home.

The short version

  • Bring a valid photo ID and be 21+.
  • Tell the budtender what you're curious about, in your own words.
  • Start low and go slow.
  • Take it home and never drive after use.
