Cannabis labels are packed with numbers, and it's not always obvious which ones matter. Here's a plain-English tour of what you'll typically find on products from a licensed New Jersey dispensary.
Potency: percentages and milligrams
How potency is shown depends on the product:
- Flower, pre-rolls and concentrates usually show THC and CBD as a percentage of the product's weight.
- Edibles usually show THC in milligrams (mg), both per serving and per package.
A higher number isn't automatically better. If you're new, look for lower numbers and smaller servings, and ask a budtender for help comparing.
THC and CBD
THC is the compound most associated with feeling high. CBD is another compound found in cannabis that doesn't produce the same high. Some products contain mostly THC, some mostly CBD, and some a mix. The label tells you how much of each.
Batch and testing information
Licensed products are tested by independent labs, and the label includes batch details that link the product to those results. If you'd like to see the full lab results, ask. At Leaf for Life, we'll show you the numbers exactly as printed.
Dates and storage
Look for packaging or harvest dates, and follow any storage instructions. Keep products in their original child-resistant packaging, somewhere cool, dry and locked away from children and pets.
Warnings
New Jersey requires health and safety warnings on cannabis packaging. They're there for a reason: cannabis is for adults 21 and older, and you should never drive or operate machinery after use.
When in doubt, ask
Labels can be confusing, especially at first. Bring any question to the counter and we'll walk you through it.
