Start low, go slow: a beginner's guide to cannabis edibles

Why edibles feel different, how to read a serving size, and the one rule that matters most: patience.

Gummies, chocolates and other cannabis edibles are popular with people who'd rather not smoke or vape. They're simple to use, but they behave differently from other products, and that's where most first-timers get caught out. Here's what to know.

Why edibles feel different

When cannabis is inhaled, people usually notice it within minutes. Edibles are digested first, so they take much longer to be felt, often 30 minutes to two hours, and the experience can last for several hours. How quickly and how strongly they're felt varies from person to person and can depend on things like what you've eaten that day.

The most common mistake

Someone tries an edible, feels nothing after 30 minutes, and has another. Then both kick in at once. The fix is simple: wait. Give your first serving at least two hours before deciding whether to have more, and keep your plans for the evening relaxed.

Reading the serving size

Edibles sold at licensed New Jersey dispensaries are labeled with how much THC they contain, usually in milligrams (mg), both per piece and per package. A package often holds several servings. Check the label for:

  • THC per serving: how much is in one piece or one marked portion.
  • Servings per package: so you know how much the whole package contains.
  • CBD: some products include CBD alongside THC.

If you're new, start with a single low serving, or even part of one, and ask your budtender which products make that easy.

A few safety habits

  • Keep edibles in their original child-resistant packaging, locked away from children and pets. Many look like ordinary snacks.
  • Don't mix with alcohol, especially while you're learning how edibles affect you.
  • Never drive or operate machinery after use.
  • Enjoy them at home, in a comfortable setting.
